Fiesta Parent Help

Dear Room 19,

To help make the fiesta a truly successful community event we are looking for an hour of your time per family on the day to help to share the load.  Your class has primary responsibility for   "manning" the Christmas gifts stall, and to assist with set-up and pack-down of the stall. To choose your time to assist please click the following link :

Fiesta and Science Interchange

The Year 7/8 students are asked to bring in sporting goods and chocolate items for the silent auction at the fiesta.  A bin is available in each of the classes.

We also require parents to help on the day running a stall.

Room 19 have Science Interchange with Mr Roberts in Week 6.  Mr Roberts has asked if students can bring in empty cans and one litre milk bottle containers to make steam powered contraptions.

Also sports uniforms are required to be returned urgently.

Term 3 Awards

The WHY behind Area of a Circle

In Mathematics this week, we have continued our study of the measurement strand.

The Pythagoras Group has been looking specifically at:

Perimeter and area of a: square, rectangle, triangle and circle (circumference)

Volume of a: cube, rectangular prism, triangular prism, cylinder and cone

The Pythagoras group has been learning Karate Maths to help them remember the formulas for each (ask your child to demonstrate!).  It is important however, that we understand the WHY for each... this is not so easy!

This week Room 19 has read about Amiri  Baraka who was an activist in the Black Arts movement of the 1960's.  He wrote several poems and plays. 

After finishing our reading we read one of his poems about how African-Americans were treated and what they went through as slaves.

This was the inspiration for our writing:




I touch the cold and dirty chains surrounding me
I watch through a barred window
at the black,
collecting water, herding sheep and getting beaten.

I long for my family
though far away
they can't be reached
As night falls I scrub the floors
until they glisten and gleam.

I settle on a stone floor
and close my eyes
I think of freedom
of being white
As the darkness fades and sunlight comes...

More demands fill the air
along with cries of fear
I watch as everything dies
along with my hope
and wait for my time to be over.

The Wild


As the sun rose between the two ravines, the trees hung over the cliffs, the water glistened from the light of the sun.
One tree had fallen onto the other side, it was covered in moss and birds flew away as the two ferocious beasts sprinted across.

On the fallen tree, between the two lion like beasts was a girl that had the spirit of a lion inside.  She was dashing across the tree.  As the girl and lion beasts ran off into the deep condensed misty forest...never to be seen again.
